Tantalum electrolytic capacitors are the preferred choice in applications where volume efficiency, stable electrical parameters, high reliability, and long service life are primary considerations. The stability and high-temperature resistance of the tantalum/tantalum oxide/manganese dioxide system make solid tantalum capacitors a suitable choice for today's SMT assembly technology. Capacitors are fundamental components in all kinds of electrical equipment, from radios and televisions to automotive ignition systems. Their function is to store electrical charge for subsequent use. A capacitor consists of two conductive surfaces (typically metal plates) that conduct current, separated by an insulating material or dielectric. The dielectric used in all tantalum electrolytic capacitors is tantalum pentoxide. Tantalum pentoxide exhibits high dielectric strength and a high dielectric constant. During capacitor manufacturing, a thin film of tantalum pentoxide is applied to the electrode through an electrolytic process. This film is applied at varying thicknesses and voltages, and although initially transparent, it appears in different colors due to light refraction. This coloration phenomenon occurs on the tantalum electrodes of all types of tantalum capacitors. At equivalent ratings, the capacitance/volume efficiency of tantalum capacitors is up to three times greater than that of aluminum electrolytic capacitors. Approximate capacitance/volume efficiency values for other capacitor types can be inferred from the table below, which shows the range of dielectric constants for various materials used in each type. Note that the dielectric constant of tantalum pentoxide is 26, approximately three times that of aluminum oxide. Furthermore, extremely thin films can be deposited during the electrolytic process mentioned earlier, making tantalum capacitors highly efficient in terms of microfarads per unit volume. The capacitance of any capacitor is determined by the surface area of the two conductive plates, the distance between the plates, and the dielectric constant of the insulating material.
