KEMET's X7R dielectric ceramic open-mode capacitors are designed to significantly reduce the probability of low insulation resistance or short-circuit conditions during forced failure under PCB flex stress, thereby minimizing the likelihood of catastrophic failures. The capacitance of open-mode capacitors may decrease; however, short circuits are unlikely because cracks typically do not propagate between opposing electrodes within the "active area" of the device. Since typical open-mode flex cracks do not produce current leakage, localized heating does not occur, reducing the possibility of catastrophic and potentially costly failure events. Driven by the demand for more robust and reliable components, open-mode capacitors are designed for critical applications where elevated operating temperatures and mechanical stress are concerns. These capacitors are widely used in automotive circuits, power supplies (input and output filters), and general electronics applications. Concerned about flex cracks caused by excessive tensile and shear stresses during PCB bending and thermal cycling? These devices feature KEMET's flexible termination technology, which suppresses the transfer of board stress to the rigid ceramic body, reducing flex cracks that could lead to low insulation resistance or short-circuit failures. While flexible termination technology cannot eliminate mechanical damage that may occur under extreme environmental and operating conditions, it offers superior flex resistance compared to standard termination systems. Combined with flexible termination technology, these devices provide the ultimate protection against low insulation resistance or short-circuit conditions. Open-mode devices complement KEMET's floating electrode (FE-CAP) and floating electrode with flexible termination (FF-CAP) product lines by offering a fail-safe design optimized for mid-to-high capacitance values. The capacitance of these devices changes predictably over time and voltage, with minimal variation relative to ambient temperature. Over a temperature range of -55°C to +125°C, capacitance variation is limited to ±15%.

Applications

• Typical applications include input-side filtering (power planes/bus), high-current (battery lines), and circuits where open-circuit fusing on short due to flex cracking is not acceptable. Market applications include automotive applications with direct battery connections and/or 42 V system conversion, as well as raw power input-side filtering in power conversion.
