KEMET's automotive-grade high-voltage SMT MLCCs (HV FT - CAP) feature flexible termination technology that addresses the primary failure mode of MLCCs — flex cracking. Flex cracks are typically caused by excessive tensile and shear stresses generated during board flexing and thermal cycling. These devices offer among the industry's highest capacitance/voltage (CV) values, utilizing a flexible, conductive silver epoxy between the base metal and nickel barrier layers of the termination system. This epoxy layer inhibits the transfer of board stress to the rigid ceramic body, thereby reducing flex cracks that could lead to degraded insulation resistance (IR) or short-circuit failures. While flexible termination technology cannot eliminate mechanical damage that may occur under extreme environmental and operating conditions, it provides superior flex performance compared to standard termination systems. Combined with the stability of X7R dielectric, these flex-resistant devices are RoHS-compliant, capable of up to 5mm of flexure, and offer predictable capacitance change over time and voltage. Capacitance variation is limited to ±15% over an operating temperature range of -55°C to +125°C. Whether under the hood or in the cabin, these capacitors are designed to deliver reliable performance in mission-critical and safety-related automotive circuits. Given the potential for harsh environmental conditions, automotive-grade products are subject to more stringent test protocols and inspection standards.
