The Intersil ISL324xE series are RS-232 transceivers operating from 2.7V to 3.6V supply, compliant with EIA/TIA-232 and V.28/V.24 standards even at Vcc = 3.0V. In addition, they provide ±15kV ESD protection (IEC61000-4-2 air gap and human body model) on transmitter outputs and receiver inputs (RS-232 pins). Target applications include POS systems, laptops, and tablets, where low-power operation and minimal standby power consumption are critical. An efficient on-chip charge pump combined with manual and automatic shutdown features reduces standby current to 0.5μA. The compact 5mm×5mm QFN package and use of small-value capacitors also ensure board space savings. Data rates exceeding 250kbps are guaranteed under worst-case load conditions. The ISL324xE is a 3-driver, 5-receiver device that, combined with the 5×5 QFN package, delivers the industry's smallest, lowest-power complete serial port. The 5×5 QFN requires 60% less board area than a 28-pin TSSOP and is nearly 20% thinner. These devices also include an always-active non-inverting receiver to enable a "wake-up" function. The ISL3243E features Auto-Shutdown, which powers down the on-chip supply and driver circuitry when a connected peripheral is turned off or the RS-232 cable is removed, automatically conserving system power without hardware or OS changes. It reactivates when a valid RS-232 voltage is applied to any receiver input. The ISL324xE devices feature a VL pin that adjusts the logic pin output levels and input thresholds to be compatible with the Vcc powering external logic (e.g., a UART).
