The TPS5516x-Q1 family is a high-voltage synchronous buck-boost DC/DC converter. The device provides a stable power output from various input sources such as an automotive battery. Buck-boost overlap control ensures automatic transition between buck and boost modes with optimal efficiency. The TPS55165-Q1 output voltage can be set to a fixed level of 5V or 12V. The TPS55160-Q1 and TPS55162-Q1 devices feature a configurable output voltage from 5.7V to 9V set by an external resistor divider. For typical automotive battery voltages, the output current can reach up to 1A and can be maintained at 0.4A for lower input voltages such as those used to implement common cold-crank battery profiles. The buck-boost converter is based on a fixed-frequency, PWM control circuit with synchronous rectification for maximum efficiency. The switching frequency is set to 2MHz (typical), allowing the use of small inductors with a reduced PCB footprint. An optional spread spectrum feature (TPS55160-Q1 and TPS55165-Q1) helps reduce radiated EMI. Internal loop compensation eliminates the need for external compensation components. In low-power mode (TPS55160-Q1 and TPS55165-Q1), the device achieves a quiescent current of less than 15μA, enabling automotive ECUs to remain in standby mode (e.g., CAN listening mode) while meeting OEM quiescent current requirements. Low-power mode can be disabled to force the converter to operate in fully continuous mode at a fixed switching frequency of 2MHz (typical) across the entire load current range. The maximum average current in the inductor is limited to a typical value of 2A. Battery drain can be minimized by disabling the converter. In addition, the device provides a power-good (PG) pin to indicate when the output rail falls below the specified tolerance. The device also features a power latch function to allow an external MCU to keep the output voltage available for the required duration. The device is available in a 20-pin HTSSOP PowerPAD package.
