Devices in the TPS6040x series can generate unregulated negative output voltages with an input voltage range from 1.6V to 5.5V. These devices are typically powered by pre - regulated power rails of 5V or 3.3V. Due to the wide input voltage range, two or three NiCd, NiMH, or alkaline batteries, or one lithium - ion battery can power them. Only three 1µF external capacitors are needed to build a complete DC/DC charge - pump inverter. The entire inverter comes in a 5 - pin SOT23 package and can be built on a circuit board area of 50mm². By replacing the Schottky diodes typically required from start - up to load with an integrated circuit, the circuit board area can be further reduced and the number of components can be decreased. The TPS6040x can provide an output current with a maximum value of 60mA and achieve a typical conversion efficiency of over 90% across a wide output current range. Three device options are available for operation at fixed frequencies of 20kHz, 50kHz, and 250kHz respectively. The TPS60400 has a variable switching frequency, which can reduce the operating current in wide - load - range applications and enable designs using low - value capacitors.
